People who want to avoid using an agent during the sale of a home are commonly called FSBO's (For Sale By Owner). There is another word for these people - Masochist!
Becoming your own agent is a painful experience, guaranteed to give you insomnia. Have you ever tried to figure out what your home is worth? Do you know where to look for that information? A mistake here could cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Despite what you might believe, you are not going to be objective about how your house looks or know what improvements are needed to raise it's value. In most cases even a poorly trained Real Estate agent is better than you at pricing and selling a home. Time and time again I have sellers tell me how much money they saved by avoiding the Real Estate Agent. Time and time again I see how much money, beyond the commission, the sellers lost by trying to avoid the Real Estate Agent.
Personally, I like dealing with FSBO's, it's a great way to buy homes undervalue then turn around and resell them at a profit.
